Summary:

Do you ever feel like you just can’t get out of a slump, or you can’t get back up after a failure, and are simply unable to get started again? Even though you know that you’re capable of it?

You’re not alone. Most people struggle at times with feeling stuck in life, and some even feel paralyzed by fear of failure and fear of rejection. Some people feel that a setback is the ultimate failure, that they can never move forward again.

Don’t let this be you. The way you can bounce back up after falling is through mastering the art of being resilient. Living a life with resilience is something I’m really passionate about. You might know that I’m getting my PhD in psychology with an emphasis on a field called “applied positive psychology.” In my dissertation, which I’m currently working on, had to do with the thing called “adult human resilience.”

I’m really curious why some people, after going through tragedy and trauma, will actually grow and become stronger through it, but other people in the exact same situation will develop what is called “learned helplessness” and just give up on life. Now, why is that?

In my research so far, I’ve come up with 10 quick and fairly easy suggestions for becoming more resilient, and I wanted to share those with you, so here they are.

    • 1. Just recognize that being resilient is a choice, so choose it.

    • 2. Look around and identify other resilient role models and do what they do.

    • 3. Focus on the journey, not the destination.

    • 4. Help other people. By giving and getting your mind off yourself, you’ll feel better.

    • 5. Face your fears and learn to control your negative emotions.

    • 6. Stay physically fit. Resilience, it requires stamina and energy.

    • 7. Laugh as much as you can. Quit taking things so seriously.

    • 8. Live in the moment. Practice mindfulness and be willing to sit still and take in the awesome power of now.

    • 9. Take the next step every day no matter how hard it might be.

    10. Be happy. Resilience and happiness are closely related positive emotions. They’re the fuel for resilience.

I hope that you’re committed to living a full and resilient life. We’re all going to go through bumps along the way. I like to say that life can be crunchy. Stuff happens, but it doesn’t have to bring you down.

If you’re resilient, you can move forward through life with confidence, knowing that the best is absolutely yet to come.
