Some of the most influential people from history have used journals. We’ve been able to learn about their struggles and victories through their powerful stories. These brilliant tales have come alive for countless individuals, and in many cases, helped shape history and the world of literature. People like Virginia Woolf, C.S. Lewis and Ralph Waldo Emerson…people who loved to share their stories and who loved to keep records of their days to be relived at another date.

Journaling helps you heal from pain, and sort through challenges. It helps you understand yourself better and cope with difficulties by giving you an outlet to be free with your thoughts. Journaling has endless benefits and it can be a great source of comfort and joy.

Many people say they want to journal…they just don’t do it.

Start today.

You can do it.

For me, I love hand writing in a hardcover, blank journal that is sturdy and feels a bit old fashioned. Maybe this make me feel a little bit like a modern day Henry David Thoreau – who knows. If you’re someone who has no patience old-fashioned paper & pen, there are some cool (and free) journaling apps to try, such as Penzu, Journalate and DayOne.

Regardless of how you do it, I can’t recommend journaling enough. It has helped transform my life, and has had the same impact on many of the people I have coached over the years.

There are many benefits to journaling. Some of them are:

Improve your health. Beyond tapping into your creative energy, regular writing can give you a safe, systematic point of release for the stresses of your daily life. Writing down things that cause you stress frees your mind to focus on new things, releasing you from the struggle of trying to control a problem. Journal about your problem, release it, and move forward.

Improve your ability to write. This is pretty simple – the more you write, the better you write. Your story is worth telling, and if you are someone who wants to be a good writer, the best way to improve is to do it often and do it consistently. Writing as a daily habit can help you learn to process and communicate more clearly.

Create success. Journaling will allow you to see improvements in your life and also reflect on mistakes. Keeping track of things that worked and things that didn’t will allow you to make better choices the next time around. Getting a little better each day is a discipline that will put you well ahead in life, and your personal journal is a great place to track your progress.

Give you a record of JOY. You want more joy in your life. You deserve it. Journaling gives you a permanent record of small moments. Things you would ordinarily forget can be saved and honored through your journal. You can also add pictures and small mementos that are special to you. This is your life and it’s worth recording.

Journaling is an old fashioned art form. It’s amazingly simple and amazingly powerful. I urge you to commit to journaling for 30 days, and it is my guess that you’ll be hooked.

Embrace your story. Honor your path and be free with your thoughts and words.

Cheers!
