Summary:
I’m a big reader. One thing that my life coach Dr. Tom Hill taught me many years ago was to develop the habit of reading and to make sure that I’m reading only good books.
Have you ever read a book that really, really hit you? I just finished reading a great book, a book that was recommended to me by three of my coaching clients. This book is so good that I wanted to share with you some of the stuff that it talks about. The title of the book is “Think Like a Warrior” written by Darrin Donnelly.
This book is a fictional tale of a young football coach who had several years in a row of being really, really successful, but then he gets down in the dumps after he has a couple of years of losing nearly every game. Getting angry and getting worried, the coach in the book finds himself mysteriously meeting with five of the greatest coaches of all time.
The legendary coaches, John Wooden, Buck O’Neil, Herb Brooks, Bear Bryant and Vince Lombardi, each teach the main character what they call the “inner beliefs” that are shared by all the world’s greatest achievers.
I wanted to share with you what the book calls the five ways to think like a warrior:
-
1. I focus on only the things that I have total control over, my effort and my attitude. I won’t lose myself in the past or worry about the future. I’ll focus only on the present. If I truly give my greatest effort to be the best I can be today, I’ll be successful.
2. I love what I do and I attack each day with joy and enthusiasm. I don’t wait for someone to hand me the life I want to live. I go out and I create it on my own. I zap negative thoughts out of my head, and I focus only on the positive and I find opportunity in every obstacle. Life is good and I’m grateful.
3. I dream big and I ignore the naysayers. Naysayers represent voices of fear and voices of cynicism and I’m not going to listen to them. I remind myself of all the reasons my dreams can come true. Everyday a person makes the choice to either move forward or backward. Today I choose to move forward and chase my biggest dreams.
4. I am relentless and I will never give up on my dreams. I choose to persevere and never back down from the obstacles that stand between me and my dreams.
5. I choose faith over fear. I have complete and total confidence that I have what it takes to accomplish the dreams in my heart.
I can’t think of better advice for me and for you in encouraging us each to go out into the world to do our thing, to make our mark and to make a difference. So here’s to each one of us moving forward with confidence as we each think and act like the warriors we are born to be. Read that book and I think you’ll love it.

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Hey, guys. Coach Brett Blair here. If you’ve been following me for anytime at all, you already know that I’m a big reader. One thing that my life coach Dr. Tom Hill taught me many years ago was to develop the habit of reading and to make sure that I’m reading only good books.
I pretty much have replaced watching television with reading. You, my friends, might want to do the same thing. Have you ever read a book that really, really hit you? I know sometimes I’ll read a book and not get much out of it, and then later I’ll read the same book again and then it speaks right to me like right at the perfect time.
I just finished reading a great book, a book that was recommended to me by I think three of my coaching clients. This book is so good that I wanted to share with you some of the stuff that it talks about. The title of the book is “Think Like a Warrior” written by Darrin Donnelly.
The story in this book is a fictional tale of a young football coach who had several years in a row of being really, really successful but then he gets down in the dumps after he has a couple of years of losing nearly every game. Getting angry and getting worried, the coach in the book finds himself mysteriously meeting with five of the greatest coaches of all time.
These guys were John Wooden, Buck O’Neil, Herb Brooks, Bear Bryant and Vince Lombardi. These legendary coaches each teach the main character what they call the “inner beliefs” that are shared by all the world’s greatest achievers. I know I want to be a great achiever, and I’m also coaching most of my clients on how to be higher achievers in their own lives.
Because this book is so good, I wanted to share this with you in this video and tell you about what the book calls the five ways to think like a warrior.
Number one is say to yourself, “I focus on only the things that I have total control over, my effort and my attitude. By focusing on only what I can control, my effort and my attitude in the present moment, I’ll have peace of mind that comes from knowing that the results will take care of themselves. I won’t lose myself in the past or worry about the future. I’ll focus only on the present. If I truly give my greatest effort to be the best I can be today, I’ll be successful. Nothing can take that from me.”
Number two, say to yourself, “I love what I do and I attack each day with joy and enthusiasm. I’m passionate about what I do for a living. I’m grateful for the talents and the interests that I’ve been uniquely blessed with. I know that they lead me to my purpose in life, and I’m fully committed to doing something I love and something that I was born to do. I don’t wait for someone to hand me the life I want to live. I go out and I create it on my own. My passion for what I do gives me a competitive advantage over those who don’t have the same level of passion. I zap negative thoughts out of my head, and I focus only on the positive and I find opportunity in every obstacle. Life is good and I’m grateful. I’m grateful for all the wonderful blessings in my life.”
Number three, say to yourself, “I dream big and I ignore the naysayers. I set goals and I fully commit myself to achieving those goals, and I ignore those people who tell me to be more realistic about my goals. Naysayers represent voices of fear and voices of cynicism and I’m not going to listen to them. I remind myself of all the reasons my dreams can come true. I’ll become the best version of myself, and the only way to reach my full potential is to aim as high as possible. Everyday a person makes the choice to either move forward or backward. Today I choose to move forward and chase my biggest dreams.”
Number four, say to yourself, “I am relentless and I will never give up on my dreams. I know that problems will come my way but I also know that I have what it takes to overcome each one of them. No matter what obstacles I face today, I’ll fight my way through them. Nothing can stop me from reaching my chosen destination. I choose to persevere and never back down from the obstacles that stand between me and my dreams.”
Number five and finally, say, “I choose faith over fear. I have complete and total confidence that I have what it takes to accomplish the dreams in my heart. You know, most failures are the result of people falling to their fears and their worries. I’m fearless. I’m fully committed to pursuing my dreams, developing the unique talents that I’ve been blessed with and becoming the person I was born to be and I know that if I give my absolute best today I can safely trust God to put me where I need to be and to make sure that everything works out for the best. I believe I’m here for a reason, and I have everything I need to fulfill my purpose in life.”
Guys, I can’t think of better advice for me and for you in encouraging us each to go out into the world to do our thing, to make our mark and to make a difference. So here’s to each one of us moving forward with confidence as we each think and act like the warriors we are born to be. Again, I recommend you go out and pick up this book, “Think Like a Warrior” by Darrin Donnelly, and I think you’ll love it. Thanks a lot. Bye.
