Summary:

Let’s address a common misconception about courage. All of those people you admire because they’re fearless? It’s not that they are experiencing an absence of fear – it’s that they overcame their fears through experience.

To grow, become the best person you can, and to live your best life means getting outside of your comfort zone. It means facing your fears. Courage is not the absence of fear – rather, it’s experiencing fear and pushing through. It’s completing something that was scary, despite the scariness. It’s using fearful situations as an opportunity to tackle your fears and eventually obliterate them.

Hey, what’s up guys? Steve Arnold here with Best Life Global and today I want to address a common misconception about courage and what it really means to be courageous. I’ve heard people say, in admiration of other people who’d seam fearless, that, “Oh well, that person is so awesome, they’re not even scared. And they just go out and do all this awesome stuff, I wish I wasn’t scared, I wish I didn’t feel all this fear inside me when it came to doing something that was outside of my comfort zone.”

The answer is these people, it’s not that they have an absence of fear, or if they do have an absence of fear around that particular thing it’s because at some point they had to overcome that fear and get comfortable with it.

I wouldn’t say that I have zero anxiety around public speaking anymore, but the truth is, when I first did it I felt a lot of anxiety around it, a lot of fear. I hadn’t done any type of public speaking since college at that point. I was definitely scared. I mean, I wanted to perform well. For me the biggest fear is I’m just gonna completely forget everything that I was going to say. And that anxiety.

To really grow and to become the best person that you possibly can and to really live your best life you need to go outside of your comfort zone. And going outside of your comfort zone really means facing your fears. And that’s what courage really is, it’s not the absence of fear, it’s feeling the fear and then doing it anyway. And that’s just something really important to think about to have in your mindset because when these feelings come up and you feel fearful and your natural tendency is to kind of go back into your secure shell and not do it, you need to tackle it because that’s how that fear eventually goes away and that’s how you grow.

So that’s what courage is, really. Obviously, it’s not about making excuses and it’s not about not feeling any sort of anxiety at all. Again, to reiterate it’s about feeling that fear and doing it anyway.
