There is one thing I never skip.

Ever.

It’s my morning cup (or two) of coffee.

It’s inviting, hot, and is my quick go-to companion for a morning meeting or as I sit down to read or write a few notes in my journal.

As I have committed to better attention to my health, I have added actual food to my morning coffee – starting my day with the fuel my body needs, in addition to the caffeine it craves.

I now always eat breakfast.

Most days of the week I have a smoothie for breakfast, a big glass of icy cold water with a slice of lemon, and of course, coffee.

My smoothies are bright green. They are full of green vegetables. It took me a while to get used to drinking green smoothies, but they really do taste great, and now I’m hooked.

We know the data is real, our standard American diet just doesn’t include enough fruits or vegetables.

Smoothies are also easy to make (at least my wife says so), once you’ve stocked your kitchen. Smoothies allow me to sneak in veggies, yes, I’m talking veggies like spinach, kale and cucumbers – things that would not normally find themselves on my breakfast plate.

If you’re brand new to smoothies, take it one step at a time. It may sound crazy to blend spinach with strawberries, but it’s actually refreshing and almost (well, almost) impossible to mess up. I don’t use a recipe, but there are tons available. If you’re looking for inspiration, or even to become a smoothie expert, a friend of mine, Farnoosh Brock, wrote The Healthy Smoothie Bible, which includes recipes and tons of ideas for getting started with the smoothie habit.

While smoothies may sound trendy or a bit new age, for me they are the perfect way to get the missing essentials into my diet.

They taste great, and are easy to make, once you create the habit, you’ll find that you feel great!

I encourage you to try for yourself and you may just become a smoothie master.

My favorite smoothie recipe:

  • ½ banana
  • large handful of frozen strawberries
  • large handful of fresh spinach
  • several slices of fresh cucumber
  • large handful of ice cubes
  • freshly ground flax seeds
  • splash of filtered water

Other additions could include apples or pineapple, and if you’re not a fan of bananas, skip it. You can add and subtract without hesitation. I have found the ratio of 2/3 fruit to 1/3 veggies with a splash of water and ice is almost always a guaranteed winner. I do use frozen fruits when necessary, but I don’t ever use frozen vegetables or greens.

Honestly, I love fruits and vegetables, but I just don’t take the time to sit down and eat them.

With a breakfast smoothie, I’m getting them both, day after day.

My wife and I have a Nutri Bullet, but there are many options that will work perfectly, including those at very low prices. While you can spend a ton of money on fancy blenders, you don’t need to.

If your diet is lacking in fruits and vegetables, why not give it a try?

From my kitchen to yours, I wish you great health and happiness!

Cheers!
