When you were a kid, reading was something you had to do in school.

This continued on through high school and college.

If you’re like me, you didn’t like to read. You just did it because you were told to do so. That’s how you learned.

(I know – there are some special people out there who have always liked to read. You are the blessed ones!)

As the years have ticked by, most people stopped reading altogether, and instead now spend their time on the computer, on their smart phones, or watching endless hours of TV.

As an adult, you have a choice.

It is an important choice.

You can choose to read, or choose not to read.

I’ve chosen to read, and I’ve fallen in love with reading.

I really enjoy it.

I crave learning, and reading is the best way.

It also stimulates my creativity.

Reading has become a healthy habit for me, and one that I plan to continue – for a lifetime.

Reading may not yet be a habit for you, but you can change that.

You can learn to love to read.

Reading is a gift.

The more you read, the more you’ll know.

The more you know, the faster you’ll grow.

Reading can be relaxing, and it can also be exciting.

In our world that is louder and more stimulating than ever, creating the time to quietly read is difficult.

It is also amazingly rewarding.

I challenge you.

I challenge you to give yourself the gift of time, alone, to read.

My top 4 tips for making reading a part your life are:

  1. Buy a book, or stop by the local library and open an account – it’s free! I love Amazon for buying books, and I buy them faster than I’ll ever be able to read them. My Amazon Prime account (aka – free 2 day shipping), I confess, is my crack!
  2. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier and instead of passing time on Facebook or YouTube, open a book. Read for 30 minutes – you’ll learn something, and you’ll also have less trouble falling asleep.
  3. Make a list of 3 other books you would like to read, or that you have heard are “must reads.” If you don’t have specific titles, make a list of 3 areas of interest. There are books on endless topics…the choice is yours.
  4. Turn off social media. Give it a rest and breathe. The next time you’re waiting for an appointment, instead of pulling out your phone, open the book that you’ve brought with you. It will be a far better use of your time, because you are in control of what you’ll see. Reading, as opposed to mindless internet surfing, fuels your mind with the topics of your choice, not someone else’s random posts or videos.

It’s YOUR time – use it well!

This month, I wish you the gift of reading and loving every minute!

If you’ll make this a habit, I guarantee your life will improve in many ways!

Thanks!
