I’m a writer.

I love to write.

I didn’t use to be a writer, but now I am. It’s become a part of me and something I feel called to do and be.

But, I don’t always do it.

Sometimes I don’t feel like writing because I’m tired or restless or overwhelmed with life.

Still, I feel called to write because it is a part of my being – the real me.

Maybe it’s the real you, too?

I’m a writer, but I still need prompting.

Writing is something I have learned to be disciplined about. I know that if I’m called to write then I need to commit to doing it, even when I don’t feel like it.

Even when I am not inspired. Even when I’d rather take a nap.

I try to write every day. I journal, I blog, I write down my goals. I also write handwritten letters to people I love. I want to give them the gift of my words, written with a pen onto a real piece of paper, just for their eyes to see. I want this to be a tangible gift from my heart.

My writing habit has evolved and it has taken effort, planning and commitment.

A tool I think is great for someone ready to commit to the habit of writing is a program called 750words.com. This is a free website that allows you to track your writing and also counts the number of words you write. It’s not for publishing, but instead is a place to type your daily thoughts. The theory is, if you’ll write 750 words every day, you’ll soon have created a writing routine, a writing habit, in your life.

My top 4 tips for creating a habit of writing are:

  1. Do it in the early morning (write – that is.) I’m a big believer in the power of the morning. There’s magic in the air before the sun comes up. Get up and write before the demands of the day set in. Writing at the same time each morning will make it easier to become a habit.
  1. Journal. Buy yourself a nice journal and write in it – every day. Write down your goals, your frustrations, and your crazy ideas. Doodle, dream, follow your meandering thoughts. Let it flow and just write.
  1. See the big picture. Why do you want to write? Do you plan to write a book or create a blog? Do you want a journal to leave for your kids? If you have the end in mind, you can set a path to get there.
  1. Write now. Edit Later. Don’t be concerned about grammar and spelling. Don’t’ worry about what other people will think. The important part is that you write. You can fix it later, if at all.

If you dream of being a writer, then do it. Make it happen. Write. It might be a blog. Starting a blog is super-easy. It might be a book. That’s getting easier as well. If you do write a book, you don’t have to publish it, but that just might happen down the road.

You, my friend, have a story in you.

Your story is unique, and it should be written down.

Become a writer! It will help you dream and achieve those dreams!

Here’s to the writers and the dreamers of the world!

Cheers!!
